#27 - Mimic (1997)
Mimic (1997)
Guillermo del Toro has done some very impressive films so far in his career, but unfortunately this isn't one of them. Not that it's a bad movie - in fact, I think it is very enjoyable - but compared to his masterpiece Pan's Labyrinth or really any of his other films, it just doesn't stack up. This one is about a killer super-evolved bug on the loose in the sewers of New York City, and a small cast of characters that are investigating it. The plot is standard monster movie fare, but this one is made above-average by the good cast, atmospheric sets, and great creature design.
Probably my biggest beef with this one is the stupid autistic kid who clicks his spoons together and talks about shoes. His storyline doesn't really go anywhere, so he is basically just there to be fucking annoying and then get saved at the end. I am a bit biased though, on account of how I hate children and all.
