#18 - The Haunting (1963)
A true classic, and one of the best ghost stories ever filmed. Many people claim that this one of the scariest films ever made, and while I'm not sure I agree with that, it does build up a unique sense of dread and has some genuinely chilling moments. The ambiguous nature of the haunting gives the film deeper layers of meaning, and raises this one above the typical sort of "people go into a spooky house, scary stuff happens" ghost movie.
I haven't read Shirley Jackson's novel yet, but I definitely intend to.
