#25 - Two Thousand Maniacs! (1964)
Two Thousand Maniacs! (1964)
Even though the title is pretty great (any title with an exclamation point in it is good in my book), it is a bit misleading. I mean, there are at most a few hundred maniacs, and most of them aren't even really maniacs, just extras who cheer and don't really do anything. A more accurate title might be Ten or Twelve Maniacs!, but I guess that doesn't have the same ring to it.
Anyway, this is another schlocky Herschell Gordon Lewis movie, although it's not nearly as gory as some of his other films. A town in the deep south is holding a centennial celebration in which they capture some "yankees" and force them to participate in gruesome sporting events. This is actually kind of a silly movie, and the over the top gore and acting make it seem kind of cartoon-like. Interesting to note that it features city people getting lost in the backwoods and a human barbecue 10 years before The Texas Chainsaw Massacre made that a genre staple.
