#13 - The Exorcist (1973)
The Exorcist (1973)
This one needs no explanation... I mean, even if you haven't seen it, the title is a pretty clear indicator of what to expect. A true classic, this is one of the great horror films that manages to transcend the genre. This film is so effective because it builds tension so well, and manages to be creepy and scary without ever relying on jump scares or tricks. While the actual possession isn't a scary as many make it out to be, what still terrifies audiences today is the reaction of the other actors - Ellen Burstyn's terror seems so real that it becomes ours as well.
Also, I think it's awesome that Max von Sydow plays such a convincing elderly man here when he was only in his 40's at the time. He is one of my favorite actors, and every scene with him is just amazing.
