#9 - Wrong Turn (2003)

This is the kind of movie that Cabin in the Woods deconstructs - some young people get lost in the backwoods of West Virginia, meet some crazy mutant rednecks, and get killed.  Pretty standard American horror movie fare, with no surprises in the plot department.  Despite being formulaic, I actually enjoyed this one, probably more than I should have.

I think the main thing that sets this film apart from the dozens of other films with the exact same setup is that it puts it's characters in some genuinely harrowing situations that don't simply involve being attacked by rednecks.  Yeah, the inbred mutants are there and a constant threat, but scenes like the one where the characters are forced to jump from a burning forest ranger tower into the trees below would be pretty intense even without the villains.

This movie isn't going to win you over if you aren't already a fan of this sort of thing, but if you're the sort of person that likes to yell, "What are you doing!? Just get out of there!" and can stomach some occasionally brutal violence, this may be right up your alley.  I expected to dislike this one, but actually ended up having a lot of fun with it.
