#3 - Slumber Party Massacre II (1987)
The first Slumber Party Massacre is a genuinely good film, and I'd even argue that it ranks up there with the best American slashers of all time. If you haven't seen it, don't write it off based on the title - it was written by feminist author Rita Mae Brown (yes, the same woman who now writes mystery novels starring her cat) and is equal parts an exploitation film and a parody of the typically misogynistic genre. However, we're not talking about that film right now. Instead, I just watched the ridiculous sequel.
First, check out that poster. Click on it to make it bigger if you need to. If your reaction is anything other than, "HOLY SHIT, this movie is going to be AWESOME and 80'S AS FUCK!", then you are a lost cause. Unfortunately, it never lives up to it's promise. In fact, it mostly sucks a lot. The killer is a total Freddy Kreuger rip-off, except that he isn't scary and his presence in the film makes no sense. He also plays sick guitar riffs pretty much all the time, and says lots of one-liners that are not funny or clever at all.
There are a couple of decent gore effects here, and the murder weapon is one of the most memorable in horror film history, but at it's core this is not a good film. To cap it off, it has one of the worst "...it was all a dream... OR WAS IT?" endings that I've ever seen. Instead of watching this, I recommend just looking at that poster again some more. Radical!
