#17 - Sinister (2012)
The trailer for this film was awesome, and I don't only mean that it made me excited about seeing the movie. It was just a really well done trailer - it was atmospheric, creepy, and revealed enough about the plot to get you interested without giving away any spoilers. It had better production values than most actual films do. If you haven't seen it, take a few minutes to check it out on YouTube.
While it didn't quite live up to my super high expectations, I did like it a lot. It features an original story, great acting, and some really good scares. Some people think jump scares are "cheap", but when done right they can be incredibly effective, and they are mostly done right here (there is one case of an unnecessary LOUD NOISE scare - the moment would have been equally scary without it in my opinion). The film does falter a bit in the third act, but gets pretty intense again by the ending.
I'm not going to discuss plot details in a film so new, but if you like scary thrillers, can stomach some disturbing imagery, and can hang in there when the plot turns a bit silly, I highly recommend this one.
