#34 - Island of Lost Souls (1932)
This is one of the best non-Universal horror films from the 1930's, and I'd even say that this one is much better than the majority of Universal's efforts. Based on H.G. Wells' "Island of Dr. Moreau", this is a really creepy film, with great makeup effects on the creatures and a great performance by Charles Laughton as Moreau. Bela Lugosi has a small role as the "leader" of the island's creatures, and his signature creepy stare is used to great effect here.
This is much darker in tone than one would typically except from films from this period, and Moreau is portrayed as seriously sadistic. He creates these humanoid animal creatures through some dubious science, and then operates on them without any sort of anesthesia. Their cries of pain are haunting, and his total lack of remorse is chilling. The film also features some great sets, as well as really great black and white photography throughout.
If you are a fan of early Hollywood horror films, this one is a must-see. It ranks right up there with Universal's Frankenstein in my book.
