#21 - Bad Dreams (1988)
Cynthia is a young woman who was a member of a Manson family type cult in the 70's. When the cult committed suicide by immolation, Cynthia was knocked away from the blaze by an explosion. She survived, but ended up in a coma. Thirteen years later, she wakes up in a mental hospital, where it seems that herself and other patients are being harassed and killed by the spirit of the deceased cult leader.
This was surprisingly good, and reminds me of a darker and more serious version of the third Nightmare on Elm Street film. Richard Lynch is perfect as the creepy cult leader, and the rest of the cast is solid too. I didn't find it particularly scary, but the tension and pacing are great, and there a couple of scenes with really effective practical gore effects.
This is one of those films that will never reach any kind of "classic" status, but is overall just a really solid and enjoyable movie. It won't blow your mind, but it is a great example of a well done 80's thriller. Definitely recommended.
