#17 - Freddy vs. Jason (2003)
(dir. Ronny Yu)
Neither Freddy Krueger nor Jason Voorhees have been heard from in years. Jason was last seen being dragged to hell, and Freddy has been forgotten about by the people of Springwood. Without fear to feed him, Freddy is weak, but he hatches a plan to regain his power. He resurrects Jason and tricks him into heading to Elm Street, and the terror generated by Jason's killing spree brings Freddy back to his old self. However, once you get Jason started, there is no stopping him, and the two turn on each other.
This is mostly a fun movie. It feels much more like a NOES movie than it does a Friday the 13th film, which is a good thing in my opinion, as I think Freddy has always been better and scarier than Jason. Pretty much any time Jason and/or Freddy are on screen, it's a blast, but the parts with the rest of the cast are not all that great. The special effects are a mixed bag - they occasionally look good, but many of them involve CGI effects that look terrible. There is an awful scene where Freddy turns into a caterpillar with a hookah that looks like total garbage (and is also just a bad scene in general).
The actual fights between Freddy and Jason are fun, and definitely the highlights of the movie. Robert Englund is great as always, although I can't help but think of the Rick and Morty episode with Scary Terry every time he says "bitch", which is a lot. A fun movie for fans of the two franchises, but far from a classic.
