#13 - Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood (1988)
As a girl, Tina Shepard discovers she has some unusual psychic and telekinetic powers - unfortunately, she discovers this by accidentally using them to drown her father in Crystal Lake. Years later, she returns to the lake along with her mother and doctor in order to help her get past the trauma, but while there she accidentally brings Jason back to life. He starts doing his usual thing, indiscriminately slaughtering anyone he comes across, and it seems like Tina may be the only person who can stop him this time.
I give this film kudos for mixing up the formula a bit with the whole psychic powers thing, but most everything else about it is pretty mediocre. The characters are not likeable, the story is pretty weak, and most of the first and second acts are boring. For a Friday movie, it's relatvely light on blood and gore, and I wasn't surprised to learn that it was very heavily cut in order to obtain an R rating. It does contain one of my favorite kills of the whole series, though, when Jason picks up a girl in a sleeping bag and repeatedly bashes her against a tree.
The design of Jason here is excellent, and he looks grosser and scarier than ever. Kane Hodder, the most well-known actor to play Jason, makes his debut here, and he will continue to play the character for the next three films. The final showdown between him and Tina is also really fun, as we get to watch her beat the hell out of him with her powers. If you are a fan of the series, I think this is a worthwhile entry if only because it tries something new, but overall it's only an average slasher film.
