#15 - Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday (1993)
(dir. Adam Marcus)
Jason, somehow alive again after dissolving in toxic waste at the end of the last movie, is back at Crystal Lake. This time he is immediately cornered by a SWAT team, who shoot him 100+ times and blow him to tiny pieces with a bomb. During his autopsy, his heart starts beating again on its own, and the coroner reacts by picking it up and eating it for some reason. To, uh, gain his power I guess? Now in control of this man's body, Jason sets off to hunt down the last living members of his family, who apparently exist now.
This series isn't known for having very good continuity or for always making sense, but this film takes it to a whole other level. Jason is no longer human at all here - he's instead some kind of worm creature that can transfer itself from host to host, sort of like the killer in Wes Craven's Shocker. We do get to see his regular form for a short time towards the end, but it is disappointing that the "final" film in the franchise barely features the character as we've come to know him. Also it is revealed that he can only be killed for good by another Voorhees, and even then only if they stab him with a special magic dagger. Huh.
This movie does have one thing going for it - the special effects are actually pretty good, especially compared to the weak efforts in the last couple of Friday films. There is a lot of blood and gore, and Jason is appropriately brutal. There are also some neat effects when the Jason-worm-thing transfers bodies, like when one characters basically melts into a pile of goo. It's a shame that basically everything else about the film is bad. Definitely skip it.
