#29 - The Food of the Gods (1976)

(dir. Bert I. Gordon)

What a ridiculous movie.  Some dumb farmers on a remote island find a gross white goo seeping from the ground, and decide it would be a great idea to feed it to their chickens.  This makes the chickens giant sized, which is good for some reason (it is unclear if they eat the giant chickens, or if they lay really big eggs or what).  Unfortunately, the chickens aren't the only creatures that become giant when eating this stuff, and the island becomes terrorized by giant rats (amongst other critters).

The characters are almost all unlikable and poorly written, and the main "hero" Morgan (played by the weird looking Marjoe Gortner) is a total douche and constantly makes things worse.  The special effects vary from really bad to actually kind of clever, although the rats are much more cute than scary.  Despite being a bad movie in a lot of ways, I still thought it was pretty fun, if only for how silly it gets.  I can't exactly recommend it, but if a b-quality movie with giant rats sounds fun to you, this may be worth a watch.
