#21 - The Vault of Horror (1973)

(dir. Roy Ward Baker)

Another Amicus anthology horror film, this one the "sequel" to Tales From the Crypt.  I actually think it is a bit better overall, but like any of these types of films, the quality varies greatly from segment to segment.  Some elements feel extremely dated, especially the clothes and much of the set design... everything is just so 70's.  Hammer was smart to focus on period horror, as these "modern" stories are often unintentionally hilarious.

The five segments here are mostly good, in particular the first one about a town where it isn't safe to go out after dark, and the last one where an artist (played by Tom Baker) employs voodoo to get revenge on those who have wronged him.  The others are OK, with the only outright bad one being a story of a man who is basically a dick to his wife and then she kills him and puts him in little jars.  It's dumber than it sounds and just awful.

Definitely recommended as far as these types of films go, and a contender for the best of the Amicus anthologies.  Someone should put together a "supercut" of all the best segments from these movies - between all seven (or however many there are) there are some moments of brilliance, but there is also a lot of filler.
