#26 - House of the Long Shadows (1983)

(dir. Pete Walker)

A cynical author makes a bet with his publisher that he can write a gothic novel in 24 hours, and to set the mood he travels to an abandoned old manor house to do the writing.  He soon finds that the house isn't so abandoned, and as the night goes on a series of mysterious guests begin to arrive.  This movie is somewhat of a comedy, and a decent murder mystery, but more than anything it is a homage to the great period horror films of the 60's and 70's.

The highlight here is seeing so many legends in the same film - Christopher Lee, Vincent Price, Peter Cushing, and John Carradine make for an amazing cast, and you can tell they are all having a lot of fun with the roles.  I especially like Cushing's use of a silly speech impediment, and Price's reprimand during one of his flamboyant monologues - "Don't interrupt me while I'm soliloquizing."  The rest of the cast is passable, but these four great actors are what really make this film worthwhile.

A fun movie that is definitely recommended for fans of classic gothic horror.
