#16 - Christmas Evil (1980)

(dir. Lewis Jackson)

Despite the DVD cover art above, this is not an actual Troma film, although it definitely fits in with their catalog.  After a traumatizing visit from Santa as a boy, Harry grows up to be a man obsessed with Christmas.  No one seems to understand that he just wants to make the world a better place, to creep on kids to see if they are bad or good, and to possibly punish the wicked by murdering them.  Ho ho ho!

For this type of low-budget and slightly sleazy film, this is pretty good.  Despite his descent from pervy weirdo to murderous psycho, Harry is a fairly sympathetic character and it's hard not to root for him.  There isn't as much violence as I was expecting, but what is there is pretty gory.  I can see why John Waters calls this his favorite Christmas movie.

If all that sounds good to you, then I recommend you check out this cult classic.  Definitely not for most audiences, though...
