#18 - Wyrmwood (2014)

(dir. Kiah Roache-Turner)

Zombie movies are a dime a dozen right now, so I wasn't particularly optimistic about this one when it came out last year.  I was pleasantly surprised by it, though.  The plot is pretty standard, at least at first - zombie outbreak happens, people try to survive.  There is a neat twist later on that I don't believe I've seen done before, but I won't spoiler it here.  The comparisons to Mad Max are apt, if exaggerated a bit - I think that mostly comes from it being an Australian film, but the way that the characters armor themselves and their car is similar too.

What really sets this one apart from the horde of other zombie movies out there is its creative and stylish cinematography.  Much of the film's colors are oversaturated, giving everything a slightly unreal quality that works really well.  There are also some neat shots that use a fish-eye lens, an effect that often looks terrible, but it works here.  The special effects are very good too - most of the time I couldn't tell what was practical and what was CGI.  Speaking of that, there is a lot of blood and gore, so if you are squeamish then I'd stay away.

Highly recommended to fans of zombie films.  Currently streaming on Netflix, too.
