#25 - From the Dark (2014)

(dir. Conor McMahon)

A couple traveling through the Scottish countryside find themselves the prey of a creature who only attacks in the dark, and who is repelled by light.  This is a really simple and effective monster movie. We are never told what the creature is or why it is attacking (although both can be inferred) - the focus is entirely on the two main character's fight for survival.

I really appreciated the fact that this movie didn't go for any cheap scares.  There are tons of moments where a lesser film would've added a loud stinger to startle the viewer, but here the best scares are simply things that happen in the background without any fanfare.  We also get very few chances to see the creature clearly, as much of the film is so dark.  This is a good thing because it leaves it up to the viewer's imagination, and also because the creature isn't particularly scary or good looking once you do finally get some more detailed glimpses.  Luckily those are few and far between.

Recommended - currently streaming on Netflix.
