#22 - Friday the 13th Part 2 (1981)

(dir. Steve Miner)

It's been a while since I last saw the original Friday the 13th, so it was actually kind of nice that this one starts out with a flashback to the ending of that film.  Not that the plot is complicated or even matters that much... this is a pretty standard slasher movie.  I think it is a worthy follow up to the original though, and is notable for introducing Jason as the killer for the first time.  Still no hockey mask, though.

The influence of Italian giallo films is very strong in most early American slashers, but perhaps none more so than this film, where one particularly memorable death scene is lifted directly from Bava's Bay of Blood.  I guess it doesn't say much about this film that one of it's best moments is ripped off from another movie... but I don't think anyone has any illusions that this is high art.  I enjoyed it well enough for what it is though, and if you like slashers this one is decent.

I watched this as part of a double-feature with the 2009 remake, which I'll be talking about next...
