#28 - Cannibal Ferox (1981)
(dir. Umberto Lenzi)
After Cannibal Holocaust, this is probably the second most infamous Italian "cannibal" movie. A doctoral student wants to prove her thesis that cannibalism amongst primitive tribes in the Amazon is actually a myth, so she sets on a woefully under-prepared excursion to investigate. You can probably imagine what they find. Full of gross-out imagery, excessive gore, and sadistic violence, this film just assaults your senses in its attempt to be shocking and outrageous
I didn't really like this one. There are some great effects, but almost none of the violence felt like it had a point. At least with Cannibal Holocaust, there was an actual good movie underneath the sleaze, but here it feels like the filmmakers were just came up with a thin plot to connect all of the violent scenes. I have no objection to excessive violence as long as it serves some purpose, but I really don't think it does here. This is not really a film so much as it is the kind of thing that teenagers dare each other to watch.
I'm finding that cannibal films are not exactly my cup of tea. Other than Eli Roth's upcoming The Green Inferno, I can't see myself wanting to revisit this genre again. This wasn't scary or fun, just gross.
