#34 - V/H/S/2 (2013)
(dir. various)
The first V/H/S film came out in 2012, and was the first horror anthology where all of the segments were done in the "found-footage" style. The framing story involves a collection of haunted/evil home videos that can have strange effects on the viewer if watched in the wrong order... kind of goofy, but the real attraction was the great shorts by a variety of modern horror directors. I thought that this follow-up was at least as good as the first one, and maybe even a little better.
This time there are four different segments (plus the framing story). The first, "Phase I Clinical Trials", is probably the weakest - after a car accident, a man gets an advanced synthetic eye implant, which allows him to see ghosts. It has some neat moments, but I thought it was kind of forgettable. The second, "A Ride in the Park", was great - a guy wearing one of those "GoPro" sport cameras while out biking in the woods ends up in the middle of a zombie attack, and after he is bitten and turned we get to see the attack from the perspective of the undead.
Segment three was also pretty good. Called "Safe Haven", it follows a group of reporters into the compound of a doomsday cult, where in an attempt to uncover the "truth" they get more than they bargained for. The last segment, "Slumber Party Alien Abduction", was my favorite - a group of teenage boys having a sleepover spend most of the time harassing their friend's older sister, until some creepy aliens show up and ruin the fun. I thought that this one made the most effective use of the found-footage format, and even though the premise is kind of silly, it still felt pretty authentic.
I definitely recommend this one. It just popped up on Netflix Instant, and I believe the first V/H/S is on there as well, so check them out.
