#32 - Let's Scare Jessica to Death (1971)

(dir. John D. Hancock)

Jessica, her husband Duncan, and a friend named Woody move from New York to the country to start a simpler life. Jessica was recently released from a mental ward and needs rest, but when they arrive at their new farmhouse she begins hearing and seeing things. They meet Emily, a woman who was squatting at the home, and invite her to stay with them - however Emily is dodgy about her past, and there may be more to her than meets the eye.

This was pretty good! It definitely feels like a low budget film, but never in a way that detracts from the experience. The actors are all pretty good but Zohra Lampert is the standout. Her performance feels natural, charming, and also kind of sad. There are some haunting scenes, and even though the pacing is slow it never drags. I love the music too, especially an electronic piece that plays during some of the more intense sections. It feels at least a decade ahead of its time

If you like moody '70s horror films I think this is a really good one. I like the dumb title too even though it doesn't really have anything to do with the movie. Recommended!
