#16 - Blood Beat (1983)

(dir. Fabrice A. Zaphiratos)

Set in the woods of rural Wisconsin, a woman is possessed by the spirit of a samurai warrior. Also something about psychic powers maybe, oh and she has orgasms every time the samurai kills? Or maybe having orgasms MAKES the samurai kill? I dunno, this was absolute trash and I don't want to spend much time thinking about it. Maybe it's just because I've been watching a lot of really excellent movies lately, but this seemed extra bad. Quite a few Letterboxd users who I follow and whose tastes are generally similar to my own gave this pretty solid reviews, but I'm having a hard time thinking of anything positive to say about it.

It mostly looks really bad - some scenes are so poorly lit that I couldn't make out what was going on, and where the lighting was okay the film still looks flat and boring. There are some visual effects that could've been fun (glowing samurai!) but they are poorly done and end up just covering the whole frame in a blueish blob. The sound quality is especially dismal - at least half the time it's so muffled that you can barely make out what the characters are saying. Although most of the dialogue is just the cast stumbling through their lines and repeating themselves over and over, so I suppose it doesn't actually matter if you can hear them.

Now, I could forgive all that if the film managed to be fun anyway, but it definitely isn't. I was bored to tears and actually dozed off twice. This is the only film that director Fabrice A. Zaphiratos ever made, and it really shows.
