#6 - Blair Witch (2016)

(dir. Adam Wingard)

Nearly 20 years after his sister went missing while hunting the Blair Witch, James heads into the Maryland woods with some friends in search of any hints as to her fate.  This turns out to be a bad idea.  The plot is very similar to the original The Blair Witch Project, and in many ways this is a remake just as much as it is a sequel.

The original film had the advantage of being something new and different - it didn't invent the found footage genre, but it certainly brought it into the mainstream and inspired two decades of imitators.  This sequel feels very familiar, having taken the majority of its good ideas from other superior films - in particular the excellent Grave Encounters.  Director Adam Wingard (You're Next, The Guest) is one of my favorites working today, but this isn't nearly on the level of his other work.

That's not to say that this is a bad movie.  In fact, I enjoyed it quite a bit for what it is - a well-executed found footage film with some good scares and some fun (if unoriginal) ideas.  If you like this style of film, I recommend this one.  If shaky cameras make you nauseous, I'd stay away.
