#24 - Murder Party (2007)
(dir. Jeremy Saulnier)
Planning to spend Halloween night alone watching horror movies with his cat, Chris instead finds a mysterious invitation to a "murder party" and decides to go. When he arrives, though, he finds that the "party" is actually a group of pretentious and inept artists who want to murder him. You know, for the sake of art.
This is a very funny horror/comedy that satirizes art and artists, and is the first film from director Jeremy Saulnier, who later went on to direct the really excellent thrillers Blue Ruin and Green Room. It has some violent parts and some fairly dark humor (as you might expect from a movie with "murder" in the title), but overall the tone is pretty light and fun. People familiar with the art scene may especially appreciate some of the jokes, like when the characters keep trying to one-up each other with fancy-sounding words to criticize someone else's art behind their back (the winner was "jejune"). I especially liked the scene where an artist shows off her video art project that is just herself laying in a bathtub while someone dumps hotdogs all over her. Video art is the worst.
I definitely highly recommend this one to anyone who likes horror/comedy movies - it's probably closest in tone to something like Tucker and Dale vs Evil. It's on Netflix right now, so check it out.
