#9 - Terrifier (2017)
(dir. Damien Leone)
On Halloween night, a murderous killer named Art the Clown stalks and kills his unlucky victims, and, uh... ok that's basically the whole plot. This is not the kind of movie you watch for a compelling story or character development. I enjoyed this more than I thought I was going to. It's brutal, gory, and honestly pretty effective. Much of it is pretty typical slasher material, but the gore is absurdly over the top and I liked that neither the film nor the killer played by the typical rules of a slasher film. I won't spoil what that means here.
Ignoring the gross violence, this is actually a really nice looking film. It goes for a sort of retro-'80s look, slightly grainy with oversaturated colors, and the synth music score fits the theme nicely as well. Art is creepy as hell, and if he had first appeared 30 years ago I think he'd be an icon just like Freddy or Jason. I wouldn't be surprised at all if this got a sequel (or two, or three).
Overall I recommend it with the caveat that the gore is very extreme and there isn't much plot, so just be aware going in. If you have a strong stomach, this is currently available on Netflix.
